As I performed different female characters for the Wigs Amore series, I
tried to remember the women I had seen in search of the right “look” as
they walked around my family’s wig store in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Watching
these women at play with their images fueled a desire in me to
experiment with my own. Where my memory failed to sufficiently
describe their personas, I looked to shopping catalogs, TV shows and
print ads for additional inspiration. I wanted to create a space with
Wigs Amore where I could recast and reflect on these observations of
women. I began to wonder if any of the “looks” I was creating were
plausible roles for Asian–American women or if they were simply read as
masquerades. How did other viewers relate, evaluate or assess these
female characters?
